Distribution: Hmm movies.....and how they get to you

Hmm movies.....and how they get to you distribution

So yesterday a thought had came to me on the distribution of a film, as I am getting more and more interested in the idea of creating my own work or the idea of collaborating on a film. The more theaters a company can get to play their film the more people have a chance to see it. Not alot but few films (in general) people havent been able to see cause the movie wasnt playing in their area or state. But in the International market they seem to be soaking up the movie trying the get the company to play the film in their area.

So that brings me to this, why does it seem a film has a better chance being shown internationally rather than "in theaters everywhere" of United States?

Any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)
