Ok, so its a play on words but I do have a "Sophie" film to choose from. The 10th Annual LA Jewish Film Fest rolls into town April 30th till May 7th with an award winning documentary opening. Telling the story about the life of famed entertainer and original diva,"The Outrageous Sophie Tucker"is a highly inspiring documentary film. Did you just now scratch your head thinking, "who is Sophie Tucker?" You really need to see this film. Everyone from Lady Gaga back to Mae West owe something to this original stage, screen, film, TV and recording super star. Its not easy promoting a film about someone born in the last part of the 19th Century, but when you think about history and film, Sophie Tucker was right there at the very start and influenced the careers of many superstars today. There are 25 films at LAJFF and they are all way too good to mention here. You have to look it all up at lajfilmfest.org. Yet, there is one documentary that I can point out to you now just because it has such a wide, universal appeal. Who knew that Football in Israel was such a peacemaker? "Touchdown Israel" is a documentary that could possibly show the way to ease tensions in the Middle East. The film points out that all faiths, all ages, all nationalities can work together over "love of the game." And, I also have to mention that there will be some golden moments with award winning writer/directors and masters of high drama attending the festival. The creator of what became the TV series "Homeland" is making a personal appearance. Gideon Raff will be at the closing night Q&A program. If you love film and filmmaking, you should check it out. LAJFF has many sold out screenings, so early birds get the tickets.
