Alec, this is similar to "Buffy the Vampire Killer" (I was a big fan). A mother and her two daughters try to fit into a small town. In your case they find a portal to the past. Through adversity and events, the protagonist gets a chance to change his entire life.

Is that the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer or the TV series spin-off? I never really got a chance to see the movie or the show except for a few clips and episodes here and there. Alec Gray is very different in tone than Buffy - but I'm sure Joss Whedon would still dig it if he saw it :) Thanks for connecting Michael!
Right, the way Whedon would do it, with irony, a theme (not fitting in a world of nut cases) and clever characters trying things. Could work.
