Cinematographer Matthew MacCarthy got his start at the age of 12 shooting still photographs with a pinhole camera made out of a shoe box as part of his school curriculum. Throughout Junior High and High School he shot black and white 35mm stills, processing his own film and printing his own prints in the school dark room. He received his undergraduate degree in Radio and Television and continued to shoot stills and experiment in the dark room throughout college. Next he attended the New York Film Academy with a focus on cinematography building on his experience with still photography and television production.
Fresh out of film school he began shooting music videos on Super-16mm and 35mm film. Music videos proved to be the perfect forum for learning the nuances of different film stocks, lenses, and lighting configurations. From there he began to shoot commercials and independent feature films. After shooting a handful of independent films and building a respectable body of work, he was hired to shoot his first ‘Hollywood Studio’ backed feature film at the age of 29. He has since spent the last decade moving back and forth between studio films and independent films.
With the increased popularity of digital cinematography in recent years, music videos have again proven to be the perfect real world laboratory for keeping up with dizzying rate at which the technologies change. Moving seamlessly between traditional film and the latest digital camera systems he continues to enjoy shooting commercials, music videos, and feature films considering them all to be mediums of visual storytelling that offer the opportunity learn and grow as a Cinematographer.
