About Joanna

Jo is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer-songwriter. She has scored features REUNIFICATION, THE BELLWETHER and 5 SOUTH, all available on Amazon Prime. She's part of BAFTA Crew X BFI network. She particularly enjoys finding unusual ways to manipulate and create sound, inspired by her background in contemporary classical acoustic and electroacoustic music. Her work draws on her varied classical background and encompasses traditional scoring alongside avant garde experimentation, especially expressing itself through soundscape. Her immersive composition method regularly includes unusual approaches to sound and instrumentation alongside extensive research, regularly self-performing to create organic sounds. She collaborates closely with the directors she works with.

Jo’s work in theatre has included plays with tours around the UK, and runs at both the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes. Jo has worked in both pre-recorded and live theatre scores.

Jo’s singer-songwriter work has included releasing several Christmas charity singles and multiple EPs. She’s gigged around the midlands, and has been played on BBC WM.

Jo has a masters degree in composition from the University of Birmingham, having specialised in combining acoustic and electronic sound worlds. During her undergraduate she specialised in romantic violin performance practice and acoustic composition. She has studied with Jonty Harrison and Michael Zev Gordon. Her debut contemporary-classical album will be available later this year.

Jo also works as an orchestrator and score engraver. She regularly works with clients around the world, and provides everything from ghost-written piano teaching resources to full scores for orchestral recording sessions.
