Coffee & Content: Building Your Story with Production Design

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

First, congratulations to all of you who have already participated in our monthly Introduce Yourself Weekend! Thousands of connections have been made between entertainment creatives and professionals from around the globe. Whether you are a long-time member or brand new to Stage 32, take a moment to pop over to the Introduce Yourself Lounge and say hello before the end of the weekend.

As you're networking with the Stage 32 community, you'll meet people from all different skill sets and mediums that you can collaborate with on projects. When telling a visual story, the production design is an essential piece of telling your story. Even if you're telling a contemporary or visually minimal story, everything that appears within the frame adds to your character's journey and the core themes you're exploring.

To start us off in the world of production design, BAFTA Guru breaks down what the role entails by interviewing some of the best in the biz. As David Gropman (LIFE OF PI) explains, "I think of myself as the hand of the director. My real job [as a production designer] is to understand how the director reads the script and what he/she sees and wants to visually accomplish."

Next, we'll take an overview of the topic with the Top 10 Production Designs of All Time ("all time" is debatable, but these picks are pretty great) from CineFix. What's great about this list is that the people who put it together made sure to include a very wide range of genres and time periods.

And finally, let's look at how to use your production designs as a filmmaker or producer who is putting together a visually and thematically cohesive story with a video from StudioBinder. Not only does this video show you some great examples of production design, but it also shows you techniques you can use in your projects.

As always, here at Stage 32, we love to share stories and knowledge with our fellow film fans. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them! Tag them below!
