Good morning Stage 32!

We hope you had a great weekend and were able to do something fulfilling and creative. It’s Monday, which means we are kicking off the week with a heavy dose of inspiration from one of our most exotic locations.

This week’s success story come from screenwriter and Stage 32 member, Teng Ky-Gan of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Teng is an incredibly talented screenwriter who writes Asian-themed stories in English. To date, he has written 5 musicals, 5 plays, and 2 short films. He has also placed very well in a number of screenwriting competitions.

Teng Ky-Gan has written 5 plays.

One of Teng’s projects titled, Swept Away, caught the eye of Tiffany Boyle at Ramo Law in Los Angeles. The story centers on a young boy who teams up with a single-mother dive instructor, after their loved ones are swept away in a tsunami, so they can both begin the insurmountable task of scouring the ocean to find the bodies of those they have lost.

As Teng explains, “Stage 32 was coordinating all my pitches. I pitched to around 20 companies. I pitched it to Tiffany, who saw some potential in it.”

From there, the real work began.

“She helped me develop it,” Teng continued. “We did 3 major drafts in about a year. Her notes made my script 10 times better. She has fantastic insights on what's sellable.”

Teng Ky-Gan has written several projects while based in Kuala Lumpus, Malaysia

The work on a project never really stops, and as Teng explains, finding a collaborative partner who is able to give smart, fresh notes on a project is essential to development. “Working with her helped me understand how important notes are; because as writers, we can be pretty blind to what's obvious.”

“Once she felt confident that the script was good enough, she pitched it around,” Teng told me. And because of their hard work and tenacity, the reception was fantastic!

“She attached 2 directors and a producer after a couple of months. I signed the option for the script in Dec 2018!”

These stories are so inspiring to me because they prove that no matter where you are from, if you have the ambition, put in the work, and find the right champion, there is nothing that can’t be done. “Stage 32 rocks! I'm from Malaysia, light years away from LA, so to get a script optioned like this is a miracle,” Teng said.

But really it wasn’t a miracle. It was Teng and Tiffany finding each other in a way that was not possible 5 or 10 years ago. Technology has destroyed the barriers of entry to the film industry. Meaning that no matter where you are in the world, you are only limited by your ambition, talent, and will to do the work. Good projects and talented writers always find their champion! Congratulations Teng and Tiffany.
