Summary

3 part class taught by Tatiana Kelly and Jim Young, Award Winning Independent Producers (The Catcher was a Spy, The Words, Lovelace, Wristcutters: A Love Story)! AVAILABLE ON DEMAND!

Are you interested in gaining a deeper understanding of what the indie producer role entails and how to improve your own producing skills? What does the independent producer do, exactly?

Some producers shepherd the production from start to finish, others jump on later in the process once the script has been developed, and others can just help with raising financing. Oftentimes the producer starts at the beginning and develops an idea or script with a writer, helping to secure the necessary rights for the script, and in some instances the underlying material, such as a book or magazine article.

Stage 32 is excited to bring you the previously-recorded 3 part class: The Art of Indie Producing taught by Tatiana Kelly and Jim Young, award winning independent producers of films such as Wristcutters: A Love Story, Lovelace, and The Words. Tatiana and Jim will take you behind the scenes, step-by-step, to learn what an indie Producer really does, beginning with the development stage all the way to packaging a film. You'll learn everything from raising financing to crewing up, including how to attach solid talent. Tatiana and Jim will teach you how to navigate film festivals and markets, and the many pitfalls of a film shoot.

Purchasing gives you access to the previously-recorded live class.
Although Tatiana and Jim are no longer reviewing the assignments, we still encourage all listeners to participate!

How To Attach Top Talent To Your Independent Film

In order to raise financing for any independent film, most investors these days will be savvy enough to be utilizing the foreign sales-driven model of selling a film based on a director and talent. Attaching “valuable” talent to a film as early as possible is extremely beneficial for filmmakers looking to get a green light on their film. However agents receive so many financial offers for their clients on a daily basis that those that are on an unfinanced film and without a monetary offer will likely go to the bottom of the pile. With an independent budget, how can you make your film stand out as an attractive offer to talent reps? How can you get top talent excited about your project without using money as an incentive? If you don’t already have connections to casting directors, what options are available to get in touch with A-list actors? Stage 32 Next Level Webinars is thrilled to bring back Tatiana Kelly and Jim Young to teach you how to attach talent to your independent film! Having worked with various A-list actors on independent films such as Lovelace, The Words, Life of a King and Wristcutters: A Love Story, they will teach you how to break through an actor’s fortress and get them interested in your project. You will learn how to determine what to offer talent based on your budget, how to be strategic about what agencies you’re making offers to, what to keep in mind at the script stage and early in the casting process and how to get past the dilemma of getting talent without money and getting money without talent. You will leave this webinar not only knowing how to attach talent to your project on an independent budget but how to get actors excited about working with you!

How To Prepare A Film Budget

Learn directly from Host Tatiana Kelly, who has produced 12 independent films including The Words (Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana), Wristcutters: A Love Story and The Procession!  One of the most critical stages in filmmaking, once you have a script, is budgeting your film. The budget can cover everything from the inception of the project, such as writing fees and other development costs, all the way to the finished film and even film festival marketing. Whether the film is under $10,000 or over $10,000,000 the film budget must present a spending plan for every dollar to be expended on the production. You will need to have a budget that is detailed and accurate because it will serve as the road map and your bible for the project. It is also one of the key documents of your presentation that should be in place when seeking out investments. It is really the scope of the budget that will directly affect the amount of money needed to be raised. Creating a budget is not an easy task given that it can consist of hundreds of line items that have to be balanced across many different competing priorities. Both over and under estimating the budget can be disastrous in that you can either end up not having enough money to finish the film or you can have enough but it will be impossible for investors to recoup their financial investment. In this Stage 32 Next Level Webinar, host Tatiana Kelly will present a straightforward method of developing a working budget. She will discuss what some of the key questions are as well as the decisions that need to be made prior to embarking on a budget. There are certain primary elements of the film and the screenplay that may be necessary such as stunts or locations or cast in order to secure financing for example, and which will help start to build out the budget. She will also cover budgeting basics and review what all of the line items represent. Tatiana Kelly is an independent producer who has produced 12 independent films including Wristcutters: A Love Story, The Words (Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana), and The Procession. Tatiana is also on pre-production on "Cut Throat City" which she is producing with Reggie Hudlin ("Django Unchained") and which is being directed by RZA from the Wu Tang Clan, "Catcher Was a Spy" based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name, directed by Ben Lewin ("The Sessions") and written by Academy Award-nominated writer Robert Rodat ("Saving Private Ryan", "The Patriot", "Thor 2"), and "House of Curl" based on the bestselling book by the same name starring Guy Pearce and Laura Linney. She is also in development on projects with Academy Award-nominated writer Tab Murphy ("Gorillas in the Mist"), Ernesto Foronda ("Better Luck Tomorrow"), and companies including Lynda Obst Productions, CBS Studios, and Tribeca Productions.

How To Put Together a Recoupment Schedule

Producers of independent films and TV series deal with a multitude of parties on the production, financing as well as distribution sides. Many of those parties have a financial interest in the project and are entitled to a share of the revenues generated by domestic and international distribution of the film or series. In order to make the allocation and distribution of revenues manageable, it is important to design a Recoupment Schedule for your project. The Recoupment Schedule, also called “the waterfall”, combines all the single deal terms negotiated between the production and investors, financiers, talent, sales agents, co-producers, and service producers. Each project is unique, with its very own financing structure for example, and therefore there is no universal format for a Recoupment schedule. However, there are certain guidelines to consider when putting together a Recoupment Schedule for your project. Want to know more? Join our webinar and we will further discuss how to put together a Recoupment Schedule for your next project!
