Right now, feature film storytelling is thriving, and executives and platforms are actively seeking fresh, bold ideas that can cut through the noise. If you’ve been carrying a story in your head, there has never been a better time to bring it to life. In this exclusive Stage 32 lab, you’ll take your feature from concept to a polished, professional 10–12 page treatment. You’ll craft a logline that grabs attention, break your story into clear beats, build compelling character arcs, outline your plot with purpose, and write a full treatment that industry professionals will take seriously. You’ll walk away from the lab not only with a completed treatment but also with a repeatable process you can use to develop, pitch, and sell every feature you write!
Writing a feature film treatment is one of the most powerful skills a screenwriter can master. Before you type FADE IN, a strong treatment helps you clarify your story, strengthen its emotional core, and ensure your idea can sustain a full-length feature. It’s also a professional tool that agents, managers, producers, and executives expect, making it an essential step to move your project forward in today’s competitive market.
Many writers get stuck at this stage. You might focus too heavily on plot and lose emotional impact, get bogged down in detail, or struggle with tone, length, or structure. This interactive Stage 32 lab removes the guesswork, guiding you step by step to balance narrative drive with emotional resonance, structure with character, and creativity with market readiness.
You’ll be guided by Davina Hefflin, a Literary Agent most recently at Verve Talent and Literary Agency, as featured in Variety. Davina represents writers, directors, and actors across major platforms including Netflix, Amazon MGM, Apple TV+, Max, Hulu, Paramount+, and NBC. Her clients’ projects include The Chi, Doom Patrol, Selma, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse-related work. With a deep love for storytelling and unmatched industry insight, Davina knows exactly what makes a treatment not just readable, but irresistible to decision-makers.
By the end of this lab, you’ll walk away with a fully polished feature film treatment, clear strategies for structuring and selling your story, sharper storytelling instincts, and the confidence to bring your project to life and get it in front of the people who can champion it!
This interactive Stage 32 lab is held on Zoom and goes substantially more in depth than a Stage 32 webinar. Best of all? As soon as you sign up you will be linked on email with your Stage 32 Educator and given a questionnaire to fill out and send back to them. You will have access to your Educator for the duration of your class by email to ask them any questions you have about your craft or career - it’s like having a mentor on demand! And, if you can't make a live session, don't worry! All class recordings will be available 48 hours after each session and you will be able to view them in your Library on your Stage 32 profile. Finally, you can expand your network with like-minded creatives - you'll have a dedicated lounge for interactive support and discussions with your fellow classmates!

- Course overview and expectations
- Understanding feature film story structure (three acts, beats, emotional arcs)
- Identifying your protagonist, antagonist, central conflict, and theme
- Expanding logline into a beat sheet: major plot points (inciting incident, act breaks, midpoint, climax)

Session #2 – From Logline to Outline
- Building on your logline: the difference between concept and story
- Developing character arcs in parallel with structure
- The importance of stakes, obstacles, and conflict escalation
- Balancing story beats with emotional rhythm

Session #3 – Writing the Treatment (Act I & Act II, Part 1)
- What makes a professional treatment (purpose, length, format, examples)
- Treatment style: prose vs. script tone (what execs expect)
- How much detail to include: balancing summary with vivid storytelling
- Writing Act I: establishing the world, tone, and central conflict
- Writing the first half of Act II: rising tension, midpoint setup
- Common pitfalls: overexplaining, being too vague, or writing a 'mini-script'
Assignment: Draft the first half of your treatment (5–6 pages), covering Act I through the midpoint.
Session #4 – Writing the Treatment (Act II, Part 2 & Act III)
- Continuing the treatment: escalating tension, darkest moment, climax, resolution

- Ensuring emotional payoffs match the setup
- How to 'sell' your ending while still leaving room for discovery in the script draft

Assignment: Draft the second half of your treatment (5–6 pages), bringing the total to a complete 10–12 page treatment.
Session #5 – NO CLASS: 1-1 Consultations
