About the job

My co-creator Brooke Tibbs and I locked ourselves in a room and wrote for a year and half. The result is a series called Broken Land. It is intensely personal and funny and real. People who know stuff have described it as “fresh”, “enticing”, and “complicated”. We need a partner to help us make it.

We’ve selected six key scenes from the pilot to shoot and release as teasers for a fall Seed&Spark campaign intended to fund the production of the full pilot and the rest of season one. We’ve done our homework on our audience and on the various crowdfunding platforms. We’re convinced Seed&Spark is the best venue to get Broken Land from the page to the screen. We’re close to securing a wonderful multiaward-winning director to helm our first episode.

Our project is guided by the following Five Pillars:

  • This series is a document for my son, of the person I was before he was born, and the city I loved
  • We prioritize moment-to-moment truth in performance and sound in production. Everything else is secondary.
  • Respect and surprise the audience.
  • Trust your gut and (in the words of Martha Graham) “keep the channel open.”
  • If we’re not having fun while we make this thing, we’re doing it wrong.

We’re looking to shoot in July or August and launch our campaign in late October 21st, my 40th birthday. The campaign will conclude the day before Thanksgiving.  We have password-protected drafts of episode 1 and the series treatment available here. The password is "almond".

Please have a look and give us a shout if you:

  • Feel a strong connection to the material and a desire to bring the series to life
  • Are comfortable taking the lead on helping us get a few key scenes in the can with a focus on high-quality performances and great sound (hopefully with a diverse and female-dominated team)
  • Have a passion for and/or experience with running a successful crowdfunding campaign

As actors who have often worked for free, we believe strongly in paying people for their work. The producer on this campaign will be compensated with a percentage of any funds raised, to be determined based on their scope of work. We’re passionate about making this sucker (can you tell?), and more than anything else we’re looking for a long-term partnership with someone who feels likewise.

Hi Jonathan! Good to hear from you! We're close to securing a director at the moment but once we have that confirmed I'll ask him about the possibility of bringing on a coach. :)
