NYCastings is a talent website, not an agency. The aggregate casting opening from many different agencies. Or am I looking at the wrong link?

It is legit. In the beginning they charged only the agencies for listing their casting notices, later like so many other sites, they started charging talent to access the full listings as well.

I don't believe that you should have to pay anyone to be listed

You shouldn't have to pay - it's like modelling agencies that get you to pay them money to have you on their books, with promises of work that doesn't exist. They should be making their money by matching the people on their books to the roles/jobs, or taking a percentage of what you get when you appear.

it is illegal to charge for job postings, and casting notices are job postings. So it's a technical end run around the law. These companies (like Actors Access) don't charge you to view the casting notices, they charge you to SUBMIT. Oftentimes, if one does one's due diligence, one can find a way to submit not thru the website. I personally only subscribe to AA as one pays per submission rather than a monthly charge. However, I have had little success on AA since it's so competitive, I actually have more luck on CL and FB.

NY Casting is useful for predominantly background and commercial projects. It is legitimate. You should never pay an agency. This site is used by casting directors to post work to a larger base of actors and if their casting notice has a short deadline. Few Film/Theater projects listed here. For NY listings of Film/Theater Backstage might be useful. Actors Access monthly fee too, AA fee also allows you access to ShowFax.com which is their sides database used by casting directors.
