So let's talk about acting for a bit. In fact, let us talk about acting in Florida. A little about me. I am pretty much retired from the directing and producing aspect of the film but still love to act if the role and the pay are right. At 68, the roles to me I know are somewhat limited but give me a good character role and I am there. I moved back to Florida from Tennesee where I was doing pretty good in acting but the wife wanted to be closer to the Grandkids and missed her friends so here I am. We moved to Sebastian which is on the East Coast and miles away from where any film work happens. (Orlando, Tampa, Miami, or Jacksonville) With gas prices the way they are and my age, I will not drive 200 miles for an audition, nor will I do background for pennies, nor will I accept a role even if booked under $500.00. It is just not worth it. Video auditions? You bet. Direct Book? You best. Provide me lodging? Even better. When I lived in Cookeville, TN Nashville and Knoxville were easy drives because I was right in the middle of the state and just 90 miles from both locations, and the production companies typically even then when I booked gave me a Hotel. So here I am now in a state struggling to have any type of film work going as they have zero incentives and what they do get going a million people are applying for the same roles and I refuse also to do cattle calls. It is too hard on me. Should I just hang up my shingle and call it good? I often think I should but everybody says "Roy, you still got some good years left and you are such a great character actor!" That may be true (no ego intended) but nobody wants to pay anybody anything and they expect you to drive over 150 to 200 miles to audition, nothing for gas, and since you can not really afford a motel, oh you pay for that too. You make nothing. I will not live in a city either. Sick of the traffic. Is there any other older talent out there in my situation? I been at this for nearly 50 years with 3 network series I was airing just last year. (Shot in Tennesee)
