Negative experiences with social media

Hi all, I'm a writer working on a book about Internet manners/culture (and I give Stage 32 a positive plug for its supportive community). A Vegas publisher is my publisher. Do any of you have stories about getting attacked on social media--for performances/demo reels posted online? Negative comments on reviews of performances? How did you deal with it? You can email me on my Stage32 email or kristin@kristinjohnson.net. In return for sharing your story I will of course mention your resume/demo reel/acting credits/IMDB page/agent or manager as well as anything else you'd like to promote. Thank you, all!

Interesting subject, Kristin. One of the very first decisions I made with this platform was that everyone must enter a proper name. No Joe12394 handles. This created an accountability factor which has, at least in my belief, led to only 5 members (out of nearly 600,000) in 5 years being kicked off due to abuse. Now, contrast that with YouTube where within 2 minutes of posting something there are dozens of trolls spewing abuse from behind the shield of fake profile names and you can see why this has become such a comfortable, positive and safe environment for so many.

I didn't get harassed online but I have been disinvited to a dinner party by hosts I don't know because of a YouTube video I starred in but didn't write. I was thinking of writing my own post about it. Ironic you asked this.

I've discovered that the more we carve our own reality experience, by simply following our highest joys and excitements, without worrying about what critics say or do, it all works out. We will all get to where we need to be, in the manner that is best for us. A critic is merely shouting about their own limitations and fears, loudly enough for us to hear it.

Glad you vet everyone.

May I have permission to quote these awesome responses?

Kristin Johnson

Go for it, Suzanne!

Suzanne Bronson

Yes you quote me

Have your people contact my people.

Curt Clendenin

From this moment forward, you can quote anything I say or do.

LOL, Fenster, i am my people--but I'll take that as permission.

As someone who posts not only on film but also on other subjects, I'd say 'everything has a price'. That is, if you're going to take advantage of social media to advance your career (and you really should), you will run across malevolence in the form of trolls who have nothing of value to offer (and deep down inside, they know it) and so who attack others as an outlet for the own emotional inadequacy. That's the 'price' you pay. It is hard to do so but pay it gladly and move on. That is, in my view, ignore them completely.

By all means, K!
