Acting : Well...I just shaved my head and I can't afford new headshots. HELP! by Cristof Boyer

Well...I just shaved my head and I can't afford new headshots. HELP!

A few weeks ago, I booked a gig as a photo double for comedian Louis CK. To look the part, I shaved the front part of my head to match his non-existent hairline. Before that, I looked the way I do on my pics on my profile. Needless to say it was a great and fun shoot but then I was stuck with this "Bozo the Clown" look with no hair on the top of my head. Now granted, production didn't tell me to do that but I REALLY wanted the part and it was between me and another actor. I guess it worked because I got a callback a half hour after leaving the studio. But in the last couple weeks after the project I just hated this look, so I decided to shave it all off. So I now I look totally different and I'm afraid it may effect future castings. I have another gig coming up Tuesday but I don't think my new look won't matter because I will be playing a methadone patient. Maybe I'll just cross my fingers and land a photo double gig for Bruce Willis since I have no hair now or maybe a military role. But my current headshots doesn't reveal that. Ugh! The dilemma.

If you're in LA there is $45 headshot Monday at actors atvantage

Cristof Boyer

Right now, I can't afford $45. But that's something to keep in mind when I can. Especially after I get PAID for the Louis CK gig, still waiting on the check.

Ginger Marin

You're a still photog. Could you perhaps set up a nice shot and take it yourself to serve as an interim headshot until you can get some pro ones taken?

Cristof Boyer

I take mostly landscape photography plus I just sold my camera, I gotta pay rent. Times are hard right now. I know someone who might take my photos if he's available. I guess in the meantime I'm going to have to take my chances. I know you have to look the way you do on your pics but who knows, maybe my audition performances and professional demeanor might win the CDs over, I don't know. I know that's a big gamble but I don't know what else to do. Maybe I'll hope and prey that my hair can grow back really really fast. Damn you, Louis CK...lol.

Ginger Marin

Well try your friend. Otherwise good luck with the hair growth :)

Cristof Boyer

Or better yet, I might take advantage of that $45 headshot deal at Actors Advantage. My main concern is rent. It's pretty difficult to go to auditions if you're living out on the street. U gotta have a roof over your head.

D. Elliot Woods (Elliot)

Unless you are going to KEEP the new look, I don't think you should be overly concerned. Reason being, when you walk into audition situations and you're 'look' is completely different from your Pics, it's a great opportunity to talk about just having " the opportunity to work on a Louis CK project BUT I can't really discuss the details until it actually airs on TV." That way, you don't have to say that you were a Stand-In or anything else unless someone asks you a very direct question. Also, in all sincerity, you TRULY never know 'who' reads 'what' on the internet. Consequently, even though * I * took it as a joke (AND thought it was funny), please consider editing your post just a bit... so you don't run the risk of insulting someone that MAY be in a position to hire you sooner than you think. My 2 cents... Good luck with your career going forward and see you at the TOP! E

D. Elliot Woods (Elliot)

In the short term, why not a camera phone Pic and run off a couple of copies at Kinko's?

Cristof Boyer

Because cam phone pics looks so cheesy, at least I think. As for keeping this look, I have no choice. At least for now, I have no hair lol. I am going to grow it back, it might take a couple of months before it looks close to how I look in my pics. In the meantime, when I go on future auditions I'm going to tell them it was for a previous role and let the chips fall where they may. As an actor you have to take chances. If my finances permit soon, I will get my headshots updated at Actors Advantage. And as far as editing what I post, I'm not sure what you mean. What was controversial? Inbox me. Actually, can you do that here? I never private message someone here. I don't know if you can.

Cristof Boyer

Actually, yes you can. Direct message me. I can take advice.

D. Elliot Woods (Elliot)

Even though you were making fun of your look/hair-cut ("Bozo"), you'd just referenced Louis CK's (lack of) hair. I could see how somebody would confuse things and/or just be 'mean' and gossip about YOU calling HIM 'Bozo.' 0_0 That's "LA" in a nutshell. LOL

Cristof Boyer

Ah, I got ya. I wasn't aware of that. Well, Louis CK is a comedian. I mean with the off the wall stuff he says on stage? No, I see your point. Yeah, I know all too well how LA is. Some ppl can get a little too "sensitive" out here, things can be taken out of context. I'm former East Coast where ppl are more up front and don't take things personal. I'm still struggling with that, just keepin it real.

Vandi Clark

I've had someone else take a pic of me with my cell phone for an interim head shot. (I was suddenly strawberry blonde instead of S&P for about 2 months.) Good lighting, plain background. And because someone else took it, my arms were down and it didn't look like a selfie. The phone has an 8 mg pixel camera which just 4 years ago was a lot of camera so it was good quality. It worked but I'm in Dallas. Whole different market.

Amber Dannehl

Don't feel too bad, the pic i'm using for a head shot on here is about two years old and seriously needs changed but it's the best picture i have right now. It's one of my senior photos from high school. Now i have dark blonde/light brown hair and wear glasses but short of taking a picture with my webcam or having my cousin take a picture when she does my brother's senior photos i don't really have a choice on head shots here in Oklahoma.

Vandi Clark

Amber, Talk to Rich Bentz @ Bentz Talent in Tulsa. He's good and reasonable.

Dan LaRoy

Go work as an extra and use that money for headshots. Or if you want free headshots go to the website modelmayhem.com or onemodelplace.com its starting out photographers that need test subjects (models) to use to build up their portfolio and you dont need modeling experience or have to have a six pack. They usually dont pay anything on that site but they will give you a copy of the pictures they took so you will get free headshots out of it.

Bill Kautz

I do free headshots for talent, because none of you guys never have any money. You might want to connect with a college student or photo club and get them to do it.

Heidi Haaland

I think there is the germ of a story idea in this OP. Write on.

Kristin Marie Wilson

Try Model Mayhem. Create a free account and look for photographers in your area that are willing to do Time For shoots. You do a concept they want, that you are willing to do, and they give you updated headshots. Stay away from those literally just starting out though. That's how I've gotten ALL of my head shots and great concept shots for free!

Bill Kautz

I do stock shots, which is another way of getting a variety of head-shots for free.

Una Love

How about using a www.fiverr.com gig to get somebody to photoshop your current headshot?

Hundune

well if this film is creative enough they could place some kind of wax and makeup on your head and make it look like you scratched your hear out. and im not joking it could work.
