Acting : What do you do? by Rahim Bukhari

What do you do?

What do you do when all the doors seem closed? When I moved to Canada in March, the pandemic was at its first peak. My quarantine wasn't going to be easy but I figured out a fun way to kill time and believe me, time just flew past me. I mean before I realized that the 14 days were up, I had already recorded 9 monologues, although I did make some mistakes like recording vertically, with a lot going on in the background and not introducing myself before the monologue.

I'm new to acting and I'm looking to be part of something that can get me involved in it. A meetup group, a local theater, a workshop or something. I've had no former training/schooling and all the experience I have as an 'actor' is with a couple of plays back in high school, all I have is immense love and passion for acting. So when my quarantine was over I immediately began contacting meetup groups in Toronto to socialize with, but since the pandemic has made meeting people so difficult, I also reached out to local theater groups too but I haven't received a response. The pandemic is really testing our patience. I was so dejected and demoralized that I decided to drop it all n quit and I was all out of energy for a couple of months until I realized that I was being unfair to my passion, so I decided to get back on my feet.

I started doing what I was best at; record more monologues. And this time I got the format right. I bought a nice tripod, read up on some basic monologue recording rules and got to it. This has greatly helped me discover myself and has also encouraged me to do more. I know I've still got a lot to learn and I'm working towards it. I'm not going to let some stupid virus ruin my enthusiasm and my passion, I realized that there were other ways to go about things. So I signed up for Masterclass in April; I take lessons from Sam Jackson and Steve Martin ;), and recorded more monologues. I know it isn't much but it's still something right?

I'm pretty sure all of you have a phase where u feel down and out due to the pandemic. How did you dust urselves off and get bk in? I'd love to know ur side of the story.

Oh and do check out my latest monologue and my YouTube Channel and feel free to drop a comment about what u think. You can be totally honest. <whispers> but please be gentle :-P

Hi @Rahim Enjoyed your monologue, fun watch, also your new tripod was money well spent and looked much more pro than hand held i phone. You are right, we must never let our passion die. Instead of trying to meet groups in person, find online groups. Zoom rooms are way forward to cut through slough of despondency in this era of intellectual void. Heh heh only problem is my face looks like a huge melon but then so does everyone else. I have not acted for many years so not sure of acting groups but London Screenwriting 365 festival has occasional zoom room table reads, you can be anywhere in world cos festival is continually online due to covid.
