Acting : Why sit at home all day? by Robert Hyacinth

Robert Hyacinth

Why sit at home all day?

Ok, so we're not working, our friends don't understand the lives we have chosen so we are now going it alone. That doesn't mean that we have to stay in doors all day. Go out, make new friends; carry business cards, you never know it might turn into an opportunity. Don't be afraid to go out on your own, especially if you are a man. It's how I came across my current agent and am now in talks with someone on a collaboration as a result. Think of if this way, when you do things on your own there is less competition and less people to put you down.

That's what's up, Robert! Love your style, motivation, and pro pic. I'm with CirrusFilms. What company are you with? Getting any gigs yet? What's your brand?

Robert Hyacinth

Hey Shawn, I'm from London and with an agent there. Most recently I did a Christmas advert

Shawn Speake

That's what's up! Huge congrats!

Robert Hyacinth

I love your energy Shawn, that's what's up!

James Drago

Every day presents an opportunity to make a new connection, learn something new about your craft or business or just do something to improve your personal skills. If you're not working at it all the time, you're not serious. Great post, Robert.

Robert Hyacinth

Thanks James, I agree. Sometimes the hardest work we do as a actors and performers is what is done away from the camera and audience.

Richard "RB" Botto

Absolutely true, Robert. Absolutely true.

Stephen Foster

that is true, however, I always recommend actors enroll an "acting buddy". A friend or someone to go to events with or someone to meet with once a week and go over your breakdowns and breakthroughs!

Richard "RB" Botto

More terrific advice, Stephen. Falls in line with the idea of never being complacent and always believing there's something you can be doing to improve, even in between jobs or during dry periods.

Robert Hyacinth

Great idea Stephen the problem is as I mentioned earlier, we are going it alone so it might not be so easy to find an acting buddy. Don't for one minute think I'm putting down your comment, but I have approached 3 actors about a feature film collaboration and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

Richard "RB" Botto

I can relate to where you're coming from, Robert. Finding collaborators is not easy and is part of the process. Have to keep fighting. But I think Stephen is coming more from a place of finding actor friends who you can buddy up with for events and exercises. From those relationships, opportunity grows.

Robert Hyacinth

I totally appreciate that stand point. I'm not sure how it is in the US, but here in the UK, those circles are getting smaller and smaller. If people haven't given up, they are pursuing activities outside of acting. I remember at the company where I last worked, I suggested the idea of going to networking events to a fellow actor and she replied 'I am not chasing acting work anymore, if it comes it comes'

Richard "RB" Botto

Sad to hear that, Rob. Again, I can relate. I started as a theater actor in NY. It was a grind, to be sure. Some people were built for the grind, some weren't. Many others put limits or end dates on when they would give up, which I always thought added more pressure to what was already a pressure filled situation. I saw the passion drain from people drip by drip. The flip side to all this was that there was a smaller group of actors who simply were not going to be denied. Every time I found someone with that mindset, I latched on to them. Over time, I had a small cadre of like-minded actors in my circle. We did everything together. We lifted each other up. All of this takes time. It's not easy. Control what you can control - Your passion, your drive, the pursuit of your ambitions.

Robert Hyacinth

Thank you for that

Shawn Speake

You're in London, and all you need are few good peeps to be off and running on your own. Making your own films. Have a S32 MEETUP and co-promote on your local filmmaking and actors groups on Facebook. This worked for me big time in Denver. Our Family is growing quickly. You can do this too, my friend. You can do this too! It all starts with a Meetup. Hope this helps! https://www.stage32.com/meetups

Richard "RB" Botto

Of course, Robert.

Richard "RB" Botto

Shawn...Now how didn't I think of that? Not enough coffee. Certainly a great idea.

Shawn Speake

Meetups are where it's at! I don't where I would be if I hadn't organized meetups !

Stephen Foster

and you don't need a HUGE group to begin something. sometimes the less people involved the MORE work gets done!

Christian Pius

Yeah, Stephen. You dont need a company of actors to really make head way. People can bring problems and im tired of seeing some folks give up on their dreams. Its hard to find passionate people around you. I craft a plan. Im building a solid online pressence, thanks to stage 32 that has made networking quite easy and boundless. I dont mind going the extra miles across the atlantic or pacific for a meetup.

Stephen Foster

@thanks Christian! I'm world-wide now thanks to my indie film and Stage32. The internet has opened all doors!

Leonard D. Hilley II

Great points Robert! I carry business cards (for my website) and postcards (about my novels) everywhere. You never know when you'll cross paths with someone 'who knows someone' in this business.

Martha Hazzard Decker

So true. If I were to wait around until someone called, who knows, especially since I live in a rural area outside Dallas, TX. There's a lot going on around here which means I can find something to do most of the time. Besides, I can talk a lot if needed!

Jason Raymaker

I can totally relate to what you said here. We really need to be creating our own opportunities instead of waiting for the phone to ring.

Alex Scoras

That's it man, Thx!

Arnaud Humbert

Yes :)
