Hitchhikers guide for the plebeian animator

I am a lay person, outside of childhood experiences with flash 8; some editing skills in final cut pro, premier and davincie resolve I have little experience. What inspired me to learn animated shorts were shorts such as this one: https://youtu.be/x7QqijTXvaU I want to learn animation and character design, if not for the purpose of creating animation than for my passion in games and game design. What is the best path forward to learning? Also, which software is generally recommended to use for what purposes? Thanks :$

Just answered this for someone else so I am copy and pasting because I'm lazy :) Depends on how much you want to spend and what style you are going for. Blender is free and can do 3D or 2D but is a complicated piece of software. Adobe has a few choices such as Animate CC(Flash), After Effects, and Character Animator. - each with strengths and weaknesses.
