Animation : Recording the script first or animating it? by G.R. Barnett

Recording the script first or animating it?

So... this makes me sound like a total ignoramous I know but for my last animation I didn't do any casting I just did everything myself. (Ah the joys of a shoestring budget! :D) But what I want to ask, for the rest of you, did you cast first and do the script or did you animate first and then do the script? Thanks!!! -GRB.

I haven't yet created one myself, but I have been studying production, so bear that in mind. Anyways, why wouldn't you record the voices first before completing the animation? You can do up to an animatic, sure, but you have to have the recordings beforehand in order to match mouth movements. You might not know just from a script exactly how the actor/actress will perform. You might have the animation timed for a simple 'Oh my' but if the voice actor delivers a good, but long 'Oh my...' it'll be a lot of unnecessary work to go back and edit the animation.

True you have a point, I'm just wondering which step to take next.

As Devon said, typically, in a "Hollywood" setting, the records are done first, so you animate to the performance.

okay I just wondered. Thanks. :)

As Devon said, you don't want to have to pay to redo animation to get a match, and you don't want to force your actors to record tracks to match animation. Break a leg!
