Hello Animators!
Please bear with me whilst I try to tell unravel my thoughts and tell you what I’m up to and where it’s is leading.
Around 2016/17 when the hope of making my feature, Seeing Rachel, crashed along with my production company, a story was stirred within me. (It’s funny how pain always seems to inspire storytelling!) I didn’t know what to do with it. Was it supposed to be a short story, a novel, a live-action film? I just didn’t know what to make of it.
And so I just left all my notes and research files to gather digital dust on my Evernote App until this year, when I met Leonardo Ramirez on Stage32. He showed me the concept art for a series of his and I thought ‘Wow! My story could be an animated series.’
After this Eureka moment, I started researching the story, until I got to the point where I could write a first draft of the Pilot. My mind has exploded since that day with characters, plot-lines, story arcs, etc. This has been a high-energy time for me.
My thought about it is that it should be a series, episodes of around 22 minutes. Anime in style, because I’m influenced by the likes of Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii. A BIG, Universal story that John Truby calls ‘transcendent social fantasy’. (I’ve found his book on Genre’s really helpful). It’s a multi-realm, multi-reality story, that I’ve already scoped a few ‘franchise’ thoughts in the development pot, that is Evernote.
I’m looking to produce a proof of concept trailer/or pilot and will go along the Crowdfunding/Crowdsourcing route with a campaign. (I’ll also be posting something about this later, in the Financing/Crowdfunding Lounge).
With this in mind I’m looking for an Animator and my question to you is, what is the best way to go about this? I’m busy creating a Lookbook, as I’m sure that will help the process. Decidedly in the Fantasy genre and with a strong social concept, but even with the Pilot draft finished, I still feel that I’m at the early stages of scoping the story. I probably have about 7 episodes worth of material.
If anyone in the Stage32 community could help me and share a little wisdom, that would be great.
Many thanks for reading this and I hope it all makes sense.
Geoff

I also recommend this upcoming Stage 32 webinar called TV ANIMATION 101. There's a Q&A with Brandon, a dedicated lounge where you can network with other creatives and I think you'll get a lot out of it: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/TV-Animation-101-How-a-Hit-Animated-Sho...

Karen "Kay" Ross thanks you for the insights, Karen! I've written scripts/outlines etc. in pre-school, tween, adult, etc. but focusing on one makes sense. I appreciate the advice!

I suggest pitch everywhere you can get a foot in the door. I have heard good advice though which is to prep your pitch for your audience. One pitch doesn's serve all. Could it be a tv series.. could it be a film etc..
