Introduction to networking

Hey everyone, just wanted to get some feedback on finding out the best way to network and "work the room" as it were at a networking meeting. Any suggestions on how to start a conversation. I'm a newbie to this.

When you get dressed for an event, think "ice breaker" --- could be a tie with a Hollywood scene on it, could be an interesting pin on your lapel, could be a funky hat. Give the other person "a handle" on a conversation. When you get there, scan the room for people to talk to. A person standing alone is good; busting up a pair is not; a trio is OK. When you ask a person a question, make sure it can't be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." Steer away from politics / religion / dogma when it is a roomful of strangers. Ease your way in. Each event gets much easier. Soon you'll be working the room like a White House candidate!

Good advice, thanks LindaAnn.
