Anything Goes : Do I by Tim Scharf

Do I

I recently made the decision to move to LA to kick-start my career. Mostly because I was tired of not being a cliche. However, I have not found anything I liked in any of the areas I have visited, which so far includes Burbank, Studio City/Sherman Oaks, West Hollywood and Koreatown. Koreatown was a room for rent that seemed very promising but it went to someone else. I was hoping being in LA would give me greater access to contacts by way of local hangouts, screenwriting classes and workshops, but with 2 week to go on my current lease and no promising leads I'm wondering if maybe I should just stay in Orange County.

An unanswerable question. Many people earn their living in the business without living in Los Angeles. Living there can open opportunities. But one does not "have" to live there. It's odd but there does seem to be a stigma to those living beyond the Orange Curtain. But if you travel into L.A. often to hang out at the local hangouts and attend classes and workshops you can reduce that stigma. You'll get different opinions; some people hate, hate, hate Los Angeles, some love it here (I do) but there is no right answer that fits everyone.

Tim, I lived in Orange County and worked in LA for 4 years doing professional dance work. It's definitely do-able if you don't mind the drive. You can still go to all the LA hot spots, you'll just have a longer drive home after. If you're looking to move up to la, try culver city as well- it's very up and coming and a ton of the production studios are right there. Stage 32 also has awesome classes/webinars/pitchfests that allow you to interact with and learn from some great people in hollywood without leaving your home- something to think about. Whatever you decide, best of luck to you! :)
