Cinematography : LED Lights by John Keedwell

LED Lights

Hi, LED lights have come a long way, and there are some great tools ou there, and there is still cheap and utter garbage ones out there. Before I say any more, what I am about to say come s from me, and I am in no way affiliated, nor am I employed by the company I mention in the following post. I did an independent test of a very interesting new LED lamp, and I thought you may like to know about it. But dont just take my word for it, take a look for yourself. It is so new I am not even sure its available yet, but keep a good lookout for it.. We tested the light output using a Dedo as a control source, and photographed it using the following cameras in a very controlled and consistent way. The idea was seeing how the different camera sensors recorded the light on a test chart and a variety of materials. The cameras were: Red Dragon, Sony F55, Arri Alexa, and also my own Panasonic GH4, as a test for my own curiousity Very quickly here, the Panasonic gave absolutely stunning quality, even compared to those great cameras it went up against. I cant show you the results here yet, as Rosco have the results but when the pictures were examined and measured accurately the colour accuracy of the Silk was off the scale, in both daylight and Tungten 3200K colours. If you want to take a look at the lamp it is a Rosco Silk 210. and details can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rufqcZ-JvqI Just to clarify, I was paid for my time to perform the test in a very neutral and unbiased capacity, but do not work for Rosco , Red, Arri, Sony or Panasonic as an employee.

I’m a little confused by this. You state “colour accuracy of the Silk was off the scale” What does that mean?? What is colour accuracy beyond 100% accurate?

John Keedwell

Hi, it means it was the most accurate I have ever seen. It was far better than anything I have tested

Hyperbole is always a little hard to quantify. Rosco has yet to post any actual info on this light despite having shown it for a few months now. I pressed them at Cinegear a couple of weeks ago to find that they have not done any serious laboratory testing in order to publish accurate spectral response, they've not even done photometrics. Without published professional specifications, who they are marketing to does become a question.

John Keedwell

it's now out in the wild and is doing very well. Great price point and beautiful light quality..I've seen it at many shows now, including the BSC cine show in London in January 2016.. The BSC is the UK version of the ASC, in case you didn't know.

John Keedwell

I have personally tested it, with photometrics and spectral responses...I hope that clarifies...
