What is your favourite thing to score? It’s difficult to say “no” to anything these days, isn’t it - but the music that really gets me fired-up is tense, emotion-lead orchestral/choral music. I’m just not a Romcom kind of a guy!
Ooh good question! I love dark, psychological, thought provoking stuff. Often with a horror inflection. With you on the rom-coms, though actually the genre I struggle to score most is comedy. So difficult to nail that without sounding ridiculous!
Joanna Karselis Same here. I actually don't even bother with comedies as I don't think I would write anything good at all. Anything Horror or Dramatic....all day.
I've never written a comedy per se, but I've written and MDed more pantos than you can shake a bauble at: I think the key to successful comedy is not to write it as a comedy. If the joke is funny, it should be played with a straight face.
Toby James Interesting. I do find most comedy's with comedy music to be a bit cringy. My favorite type of comedy is in moments of tense and uneasy situations.
Great advice Toby James. It does depend on what the director wants though. If you've got a director who's on the same page then you're fine, but occasionally I've dealt with directors who want to lean into that "comedy" feel which makes life very difficult!
