Obtaining Music Rights for a Feature Film

Need help with navigating these waters, have a very big project inches away from reality, need to gain the music rights from a very popular band

Brian Alan DeLaney

I would imagine the first step would be to contact their label if they are on one.

And for music clearance (assuming you aren't able to do it yourself), you could check out https://www.musicsupervisor.com

I've never used them, but they seem to get suggested a lot on this site.

Good luck!

Joel Irwin

I second Jonathan's musicsupervisor.com. I know the founder "Barry Coffing" - a real great and knowledgable and professional music supervisor. He would have been who I suggested for people who don't want to do it themselves. He has worked with and placed music in all the major studios including Oscar winning films.

Barry Coffing

Thanks Joel

How long does it take to get approved to use that website? Just signed up! And thank you

Blake Robert Ward

Just got accepted into the website. They don't carry the band I am looking for. Any other suggestions?

Barry Coffing

Can you afford the band you are looking for? If not you can find an indie band in the same style.

Barry Coffing

If you want someone to research all the owners of the master and publishing and put in a request for license we know people who can do that too. If you have any questions call me at 310-738-3800

Steven Harris Anzelowitz

Contact ASCAP and get the rules.

Barry Coffing

ASCAP may be able to tell you who owns the publishing but that is only 1/2 of the rights required. You need to license the recording aka master also. PS There are NO RULES a composer can charge anything they want or even say NO for any reason.

Steven Harris Anzelowitz

Barry Coffing My father was a member. I am a grandfathered member. I was just trying to help him. Let him go to ASCAP and get the rules please it is the best place for Blake Robert Ward to start. Than he can have a good base of information to move forward. You follow? Good! Moving on!

Barry Coffing

Steven, the song he is looking for my be 100% represented by BMI. ASCAP may have nothing to do with the song he is seeking. I work with a lot of indie filmmakers and I can’t tell you how many times they have secured the rights to the publishing of a song but do not realize that the rights of the recording must be secured also. I was simply making that point so he would be clear about what he needs to do to be safe and legal.

Barry Coffing when would be a good time to call you? I'm located in Los Angeles PST
