I have been trying to decide for a while now if I should try and join the local chapter of IATSE hoping for 2nd assistant camera work on a large picture. I currently am living in Pittsburgh, where more and more Hollywood films are being shot. I just worry that joining a union like this right out of school may not be a great idea. What are your thoughts?

If the union will get you jobs then joining is a good thing. If being a member allows you to pursue more jobs then joining is a good thing. My advice it to head over to the local office and talk to a rep there. It can only help to get yourself known there. Then check out the local non-union job market. You might get more non-union work for a while. But you might get more union work.
