13 HOLLYWOOD WAYS TO SAY "You're ignorant or Go away" (Guarantee you'll like #6 and #11)

Preston Poulter

So what's the difference between a film and a movie?

Dov S-S Simens

Anyone can make a "film". The key is have a "movie". A film becomes a movie when it is in a "movie theater" (wait) and "charging admission. Now it has a value. It costs $10-$12 to go see a movie. There will be newspaper ads. People will see the ads and think this commodity (they don't say commodity) is worth money... Thus, the battle is not to just get money to "make a film" but to ensure that you have enough money to "make film into a movie"... Welcome to Hollywood

Thank you... Just trying to be the best film instructor possible...

I do have to say though that the attitude of arrogance that this article says belongs to everyone in the know is rather undeserved. Sure, Transformers was a bad movie that they marketed well and made a lot of money, but when they make the leap into believing that they can sell anything to anyone they end up going down a road that leads to huge box office disasters. IMHO, anyone who thinks of movies as a commodity is an incompetent hack. We are making art, and as soon as you lose touch with that, it won't end well for you. They would also do well to read newcomer screenplays that are outside of their rather arbitrary 95 pages (and this article is the only source I have for that).

I agree "Filmmaking is art" and I teach the "Business of making the art" on Day-1 and on Day-2 I teach the "Business of selling the art"... I am always befuddled to think that someone actually believes that they can teach how to make art. God Bless... Again, "I agree it is art"
