Filmmaking / Directing : Film Shorts, what should I be thinking? by Thayne Wheeler

Film Shorts, what should I be thinking?

I work in film as a production designer / art director. I also do some graphic art (faux labels, printed materials, etc) for productions. I did go to school for for my grad decades ago in film directing (ACCD). I also have degrees in illustration and graphic design. And I'm also a photographer. My life's path has been a bit crazy.

Last year I shot a short film (sort of a POC) that is titled, "Second Chances." I also have another short, "Christian" that I had done years prior and halted during post production. My plan is to get both of these completed.

I've read RB's book andI have been listening to Alex Ferrari's podcast. I've heard that some have monetized their shorts and / or have put them out there on more effective platform, but I'm not sure how to do that. Of course, like most I did not think beyond getting them shot and edited. They are about 10 minutes each in length. To be more clear, is there something more intelligent that I should do and how beyond throwing up a finished product on social media such as YouTube?

We made shorts as our audition reels for paying jobs. To practice, gain work experience than classroom theories. That's about it.

Shot and learn, shot and learn.

Thank you! Yes, I didn't mention that these would be used as proof of my abilities. Well, actually my second short (Second Chances) was meant as a proof of concept. And the more you do the more you learn.

Seek festivals, target Oscar qualifiers...there really are possibilities even for career advance...just don't seek big bucks outta it.

Thank you, Kiril!

Can I see 'em anywhere?

Thayne Wheeler

Doug, they are in post production. The more recent one is going through audio sweetening plus other additions. The older short, I will re-edit and shoot a few additional small scenes to update it. Since I work in film, I have access to professionals who assisted me, so the quality is good.

Doug Nelson

So the basic answer is 'no'.

Just found out that one of my homeland short's made it to a Academy shortlist for nominees. He won a best film award at a Oscar qualifying festival....so there you go...it's possible.
