As someone who is just starting out, I'm curious... how did all of you find your first job? Was it someone higher up who gave you a chance, did you "earn it" by years of PA-ing, or did you just pick up a camera one day and happen to show your project to the right people?

Hey Alexander, there is actually a webinar coming up EXACTLY on this topic https://www.stage32.com/webinars/How-To-Get-A-Paying-Job-In-The-Film-Ind...
My experience was all of the above. I PA'ed on a lot of indie and major films in New York, as time passed people got to know me and always called me back. Soon I was branching out into assisting with other departments. But when I worked with the sound guys, that's when things took off. After a few years I brought my own equipment and was recording and editing audio. That got me into video editing, I went back to college and degreed in directing/writing and cinematography and never looked back.
What about in markets that are not as hot as New York?
