Seeking advice on starting a TV series in Germany.

It was an idea that started two years ago. Our collaboration resulted on 10 episode first draft with commissioned writer. Now the second draft is in-progress and I was asked to join them in Germany for pre-production. I am planing to travel there before February. .

I will be the Director of the series and I am already prepared with look book, storyboards, shot lists, loglines/treatment.synopsis. We are aiming at different scale production based on available funds including doing a pilot only scale. The writer and myself are very close collaborator since the beginning.

The story genre is Drama/thriller about refugees start a life in their new adopted country Germany while dealing with painful past that haunts their present time. Murder, PTSD, abuse and painful pasts complicates their journey to normalcy.

I am very excited to be part of the project and i would really appreciate any advise on venturing out to make a project of this scale.

1-What kind of pitfalls and things to pay attention to especially that I have to spend time in a different country?

2- If you have an advise for someone who is relatively new to large production? I have done short films but nothing this ambitious

Make sure your producer knows things like laws for actors (like we have SAG) and permits for local shoots.

Hey Matt, that's a cool opportunity! Be sure to keep track of the latest Covid news when traveling. I'm in The Netherlands, in a strict lockdown right now until Jan 19. Also, speaking German can be handy and I agree with Alex as well. Prepare yourself by getting to know crew members beforehand. Good luck!

Thanks for reaching out Matt Kotrob! Gathering allies is a great way to ramp up to a big project. I often work on other people's sets to gain support. If you are attracting help, whether on small or large productions, the equation is still the same - do your homework on the logistics and give your collaborators something to get excited about. Cool shots, stunts, meaty acting parts, COOL LOCATIONS (hint, hint). Keep at it and keep us posted!
