Specs for Shooting a 3D HD Film

I've been tasked with putting together a Gigabit Media Showcase late spring (2014), and I'm doing some of the groundwork before putting out specs for 3D HD content that will run in the format of a "mini film festival" over our gigabit wireless network at 60 fps. This network will run between two locations (current plan is between San Francisco and San Jose, CA) and we will select 15-20 films to showcase, along with 10-15 commercials. I have to admit I'm a marketing gal who focuses on high tech and launching new technologies. A friend of mine directed me to this site as a way to start a dialogue with the filmmaker community. If I am posting in the wrong place, kindly direct me to the correct place. Thank you!! I am trying to figure out our specs for filmmakers to create their content. We want to show case the highest quality possible... so I have been trying to understand what cameras are on the market now that can shoot film that supports what we are trying to showcase - which according to our founder/CTO is "Full 4K/UltraHD encoding/decoding support in all hardware, e.g. HEVC Level 5.1, 4096x2160 pixels @ 64.0 fps, High Tier or equivalent." It has come up several times in my exploration of cameras that there isn't a lot of equipment that will come near supporting this. In fact so far I've only come across two viable options: Red Epics and Sony F55. And these seem very high end, and not widely available. So we have decided to try and split the film festival into a couple of sections. One that is "4K" focused and one that is focused more on the cutting edge, but in current use 3D technology. I'm looking for information on more commonly available cameras and the specs I might put out for filmmakers to create their short films in. I also would love some insight on the camera or related equipment that filmmakers would like to receive as one of the winners of the festival? Or what a dream prize package would look like. (Be somewhat realistic!!) : ) This is a whole lot of explanation, so thanks baring with me. I appreciate any feedback. You may also contact me privately if you wish. Thank you! Have a marvelous day!

First thin first, good luck. I liked the topic of your research, please keep me updated :) Yes, there are next to none, so far, affordable 4K camera with these specs. I said next to none because I recently learned about the new camera by Blackmagic design. They call it BMCC4K (Black Magic Cinema Camera). Ironically, the short name is based on their original cinema camera 2.5K. The new 4K is called Production Camera. Please check it out http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicproductioncamera4k For the prices, I would be happy to get BMCC4K with some cinema lenses :) but obviously no camera beats RED Epic Dragon so far. So, yes absolutely I would be dancing on stage if they announce me winning RED Epic. However, RED's cameras without accessories are just a box. To get one of theirs to camera one need equal expensive accessories. So, if the festival can afford to give winners a 40-50 thousand camera packages then RED Epic is the way to go. Regards R.A.

You are working at both ends of the spectrum, from what I am gathering. Let me first state, I only read and do not have classroom experience. First off, you mention web based. Which makes me think of the codec to export for delivery. "How big to stream?" Then there is speed issue of the routers d.loading. IGE: I live in a place where my wireless router does not stream VImeo's HD files well, conversely Youtube's coders use a ping and stream their content to accommodate slower streams. 720,360,240... With that being stated. The delivery end. I do not see how cameras make a call on that delivery. Due to my Software can take RED format 4k and reduce it to 480 or whatever the delivery desired. Secondly, 3D can be achieved with software. http://library.creativecow.net/kaufman_debra/Gravity-3D-Conversion/1 The reading part..... What do cameras have to do with your final out for delivery, if the camera used can support a 16bpc color? Along with a few other things like 442 or 444? P.S. I am aware that there is a camera for shooting 3d, or rather two, for that. As there are cameras that support Gigapixels, which the eye won't see nor will it make through to final delivery. However how will camera manufactures get you to buy a new one when your 16mp will get you there?

I'm working on a 3D film in China onscreen and they are using Arri cams hooked up to a lot of equipment, it's quite technical and you should probably consult a pro to do it right.
