"Divergent" Series Heads to TV - Cutting Losses or Seeking Bigger Gains?

Now this is an interesting distribution change....Lionsgate is taking the Divergent series off the big screen, opting instead for a TV-Movie and spinoff series. The initial reaction has been that Lionsgate is writing the series off after the last film underperformed. I wonder if, odd as it may seem, this move is actually an attempt to not "vanish" the series, but increase its value by tapping into the ever-growing, CW-centric youth market in TV. Thoughts? http://variety.com/2016/film/news/divergent-series-ascendant-1201818694/

The latter, Matt. Studios are now treating these franchises as if they have tentacles. Cross platform, cross format, cross everything. NOW YOU SEE ME just got a Chinese spinoff. The possibilities are endless.

Responding to the market's challenges and its opportunities to achieve the best bottom line results.

No question, Regina. Double edged sword in some ways. Everyone wants a franchise, but this desire (and the prospect of riches for decades) causes some to will a franchise to happen. Yet one more reason we've had so many bombs lately.
