Feature Documentary, festivals and distribution.

Anyone have experience submitting their feature to Amazon? What distributors are open to direct submission? Has anyone world premiered their doc at a festival? and which festival?

I came across this article regarding direct distribution. It might have some helpful content for you. https://www.filmmakingstuff.com/sell-a-movie-to-netflix/

From experience, it's always a plus when your film has screened at a few festivals. They don't have to be the big ones, medium-size festivals (which makes up over 70% of film festivals worldwide) is more than enough buzz.

Also, with regards submitting your film to Amazon, Its always best when you work with an aggregator. Amazon, as well as other major VODs wont, accept film sent directly to them except you submit to one of their partnered aggregators. Distribber no doubt is still the top player but I personally find them very exploitable. I came across a new kid in the block called Filmhub.com. They only take a commission once your film gets into their partnered VODs with no prior financial commitment on your part. You have nothing to lose after all.

I could assist with some tip in helping your doc get into some festivals if you like. As a matter of fact, Docs are a serious hot cake now at some amazing film festivals I know of.

You don't really submit your feature - you just have to make sure the content complies with their policies (ie. no calls to outside sites, proper subtitle files). It's not hard it's just tedious.

I've submitted my shorts to Amazon and it is a finicky and tedious process and the help section is not helpful and the support takes days to answer back with a copy and paste of text from the unhelpful help section. Now, once you make it through the process and your film is up on Amazon, it's super easy to begin your marketing campaign and promote your link for viewing! Amazon pays the royalty every month without fail no matter what the amount is. It's worth it in the long run.

Right on, Cherelynn. Thanks for that info ;)
