Distribution : Know your audience by Ed Fletcher

I'm planning on launching an online survey to try to learn more the potential audience/crowdfund supporters for my film project. Has anyone have any experience employing methods to try to understand your audience in anticipation of crowdfunding and eventually direct distributing.
