Movie Industry Spends More Preventing Piracy Than Actual Losses

That sucks. http://bit.ly/1wAjmJo

Douglas Eugene Mayfield

What would the piracy losses be if they spent less or nothing at all?

Andrew Heard

According to this article? There's no apparent connection between piracy prevention and actually stopping piracy.

Douglas Eugene Mayfield

Distribution is not something about which I know much, so I'm really not looking to start a big debate but after reading the article, I'd still say that piracy may be a significant problem, even with what they're spending, and perhaps more so if they spent less. A quote from the article "My best guess estimate is that file sharing reduced the first month box office by $200 million over 2003-2009, which is only three tenths of a percent of what movies actually earned. I am unable to reject the hypothesis that there is no impact at all of file-sharing on revenues." His use of phrases like 'My best guess estimate...' and 'I am unable to reject the hypothesis that...' suggest to me that his conclusions are not iron clad.

Andrew Heard

No study is ever iron clad. This is one of several studies which say the same thing essentially about the impact of piracy on box office numbers. Any pollster will tell you that you can't call an election. They poll likely voters but 50% of people in most democracies don't vote. Pollsters can't account for some issue galvanizing the nonvoting public to vote. These studies are the same. They can account for a lot of things, but not the unknown.

Douglas Eugene Mayfield

You certainly could be right.

Jon Schiefer

The beauty/horror of HW accounting is that the cost of preventing piracy will be sorted as the cost of piracy.
