Did I miss something? Someone tell me about this podcasting race! Is it a thing because of the low overhead and ample advertising space? What's the appeal that's landing huge deals?

It's been growing for a long time. It's budget and advertising driven, as they don't pay for production and basically pay an order of magnitude less than film product in advertising split.
