Hi everyone, I am pretty new to Stage 32 but love all the information and connections that I have made! I have a question for those familiar with Film Festivals. I have written a screen play and it has been filmed and is now in post production. We are a romantic comedy (you can check us out on Faceback or IMDb, "The Trailer Bar Book Club.") Would love anyone's thoughts on what you see regarding the film. Also, we want to take the film to a film festival and was wondering what film festivals are more interested in and open to romantic comedies? If anyone has some thoughts on that I would love to hear them! Thanks so much and look forward to participating through Stage 32! Sincerely, Lynne

HI Kelly, thanks for the reply! We are working on the trailer right now and hope to have it completed by the end of January. When we do we will post it to Facebook and possibly IMDb. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Also, if you have any thoughts on good film festivals for romantic comedies I would love to hear your ideas. Thanks, Lynne

Hey Lynne, once you're ready to take it to a festival Stage 32 had a webinar all about How To Navigate Your Film Into A Major Film Festival. Might be of use to you! https://www.stage32.com/webinars/Navigating-Your-Film-Into-a-Major-Film-...

Kelly great ideas! I love the thought of releasing the trailer on Valentine's Day and have already spoken to our group about that. We are local to Wilmington NC (in fact the Trailer Bar is an actual bar near there where we filmed). So I will also look into local theaters, etc for screening and we could even look at screening in at the bar!!! That would certainly be supported since we used the local community in the filming. We plan on entering the Wilmington Film Festival (Cucalorus) and the Charleston SC Film Festival. Thanks for the advice on local opportunities! And Shannon I have also taken your advice and have purchased and listened to the webinair on going to Film Festival. All great ideas, thank you both so much! If you have any other thoughts send them my way!

Gretchen Cooper

I posted about IO West. Its having a scripted comedy festival and you can screen your short at it. Also check out withoutabox for other festivals you can submit to!

Lynne Smith

Thanks Gretchen! We aren't a short, we are feature length. Where can I find your post on IO West? I will look for it, but in case I don't find it if you have the chance to send me a web address I would appreciate it.. Thanks, Lynne

Lynne Smith

Hey Gretchen, forget the last request, I found your post. I don't think we qualify because we are feature length but let me know if you think I am wrong. Thanks again! Lynne

Please check it out on our Facebook page- The Trailer Bar Book Club- Movie Page and like and share if you think it looks good! Also feel free to send me any comments or thoughts you may have! We are always looking to improve and value your input! Thanks everyone! Lynne

Megan Peterson

We love romantic comedies -- anything indie!! Please consider submitting to our festival in far Northern California. https://filmfreeway.com/festival/JeffersonStateFlixxFestival

Lynne Smith

Thanks so much Lynn and Megan! We will look to submit to both these festivals! We are hard at work on final editing! Thanks again, Lynne

Lynne Smith

Hi everyone, just wanted to update on our progress on our romantic comedy, "The Trailer Bar Book Club." As with many first time independent films, we really underestimated how long film editing would take to get a quality product. We did some reshoots, audio adjustments, etc. so we have now just completed this film! I have submitted to 2 film festivals and am waiting to hear back. I am so sorry we missed the deadline for the Jefferson State Flixx Festival, Megan! Hopefully next year! If anyone has an update on film festivals that they recommend I submit our romantic comedy film to I would greatly appreciate it! Also, just as an fyi, we will be having our premier at the actual Trailer Bar where we filmed in Surf City, NC in September and will be posting to our Facebook page announcing this shortly. So any suggestions on film festivals, or anything else related to release of this film would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone, Lynne

Regina Lee

Hi Lynne, assuming it's too indie (e.g. no well-known cast, director, etc.) to be accepted into the major film fests (Sundance, Tribeca, TIFF, etc.), try Googling "comedy film festival." You'll get several results. Break a leg!

Lynne Smith

Hi Regina, thanks for the tip. Yes we are all indie! So I will take your suggestion. Thanks so much!

Sdkids Tang

you can try to submit it to the Universe Multicultural Film Festival, http://www.umfilms.org

Lynne Smith

Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate it!

Ramsey Stoneburner

Lynne, check out FilmFreeway. You can submit to lots of fests that way. And check out the Helios Film Festival in Cincinnati OH! We are all about promoting women in film. Http://heliosfilmfestival.org Happy submitting!

Ondrej Michalek

Hi Lynne, Your project sounds very interesting. If you would want the top industry professionals to check out your product as well I would recommend having a look at this app - www.filmplix.com - registration is for free and I am sure it would be worth it for such a nice product.

Lynne Smith

Thanks Ondrej, that is great advice and I will do that. I appreciate your compliment too! Thanks again. Lynne

Bill Costantini

Lynne, what would be your ideal release platform for "The Trailer Bar Book Club?" Do you see it as a cable movie....independent theatrical release....Internet release....DVD, etc?

Lynne Smith

Hi Bill, I would love it to be a cable movie (Lifetime, etc) but I am not sure we are at that quality. We did reshoot some scenes where we had audio issues (we were shooting in a bar after all and we had the locals as extras so it was hard to control audio, we've learned a lot since the first shoot!). We would also love DVD release. If you have any advice we would appreciate it. Thanks, Lynne

Bill Costantini

I don't think my advice qualifies as expert advice, but if you already feel that you have some quality issues, well...that's not good. If a distribution expert confirmed that, then I would imagine that, at best, your current version would serve you best as a demo to a production company that would partner up with you and that could make a better version. Or that you can use it and try to raise the money on your own from someone with capital in order to re-shoot it. I would probably try to get a distributor to review it first, and take it from there. Good luck, Lynne.

Lynne Smith

Thanks Bill. I think that is great advice. I hadn't considered that. I will talk to some local contacts regarding distributors but if you also have any contacts that you could recommend I would appreciate that. Thanks again for your help.

Lynne Smith

Just wanted to update everyone and thank you again for such great advice. We went back and fixed some of the audio (reshot one scene with lapel mics) and added music throughout the film. We then had our premier of "The Trailer Bar Book Club" at the actual Trailer Bar where we filmed and it was a great success! We had copies of the DVD there for sale and sold out! I then took the advice of people here on this blog and submitted to local film festivals and we have been accepted to the Eastern North Carolina Film Festival! We are so excited! They have also stated they can help with distribution. I have not looked into that yet and hope the festival can provide us with some support in that regard. Thanks again to everyone here for your advice! It really made a difference!
