Introduce Yourself : Aspiring Writer/Director by Roman Soto

Aspiring Writer/Director

Hello. I just made a new account here, and I am excited to meet other people who are looking to enter, or already in, the entertainment industry. I'm 20, and I am going to be moving to Oklahoma from Connecticut soon. Filmmaking is what I want to do for the rest of my life and I am very eager to get my career started.

Welcome! You're definitely in the right place and among the right people.

I would recommend what any person in Film would recommend to you and that is to just watch any and every movie you can - And I don't just mean all the popular ones and the Oscar ones - I mean, watch every good and bad movie, seeing what works and what doesn't; appreciating every frame and every story beat and every little choice the artists makes, until the craft runs in your blood too.

Cheers!

Yeah! I have many movies in my collection. From classic Hollywood, to modern blockbusters, to silent cinema, to foreign arthouse. I love many of them, but I even have problems with some films that I own. I don't get rid of them though. I use them to define my outlook on film, and what I would/wouldn't do as a filmmaker. I don't hate these films though, it's important to find aspects to appreciate about them. Thanks for the comment.

One thing I’d recommend is study the history of film, and where the techniques came from, not just where another director paid homage to them. Getting to the source teaches a director how to be creative and innovative with limited resources and some imagination.
