Introduce Yourself : Badass Jamaican Female Director by Tanya E. Taylor

Tanya E. Taylor

Badass Jamaican Female Director

Hey storytellers.

After over a decade crafting content in Jamaica, I moved to NY a few years back to pursue a career directing episodic content. Alas, without an agent, I've yet to achieve the goal. I've been entering competitions and wrote, directed and self funded my own short last year. The piece is making the festival rounds and I'm waiting to be "found" by an agent, which is what everyone says is the way it happens.

Anyone have any more proactive ideas on how to find an agent that will be a great partner in my career? Someone who understands how to get a Black, female international director hired?

Thoughts?

Hi Tanya. Landing an agent organically is certainly not impossible. For me, that came about through building relationships and winning champions of me and my work. That, of course, means embracing the long game, which, as artists, we should be doing anyway. It's IYW as you know. Take the time to get involved in other people's threads. Send network requests. Get deeply involved. Ultimately, you WILL win champions who will tell reps that they need to look at you and your work. Remember, there are many paths, but this is the one most people quit on because it takes work along with patience and perseverance.

Oh, and stay badass :)
