Introduce Yourself : Cinematographer by Matthew Skala

Matthew Skala

Cinematographer

Hello! I am a Cinematographer based in LA. I have shot features, shorts, music videos, documentaries, commercials, and PSA's on a range of formats from film to digital. Last year i shot a short that was excepted into this years Cannes Film Festival. I am currently pursuing my next project and am partial to the artful expression of emotion and the trials of the human spirit. I am compelled by projects that explore these themes through fantasy and distinctive imagery. You can see some of my work on my website: www.matthewskala.com Cheers!

Brandi Alyssa Young

Nice to meet you, Matthew!

Matthew Skala

You too!

Matthew Skala

I lived in NC for 8 years and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts University School of Filmmaking. How is the Industry out there?

Brandi Alyssa Young

Well, they say it's booming, but LA is still bringing all their talent, but for a few, rare bit parts and featured and extras for us here to fight over! How was UNCSA for film acting, do you know? I am looking into colleges, but they seem more theatre based, is it?

Matthew Skala

It is more theater based, At least it was when I was there. But the film school is there, so you'd have the opportunity to act in the student films if that is what you want to do. There wasn't much mixing going on between the too disciplines but that may have changed, I am not sure.

Brandi Alyssa Young

That's what I thought too, looking at everything. Thanks a lot. Being that you are in LA now, what if anything have you heard about The New York Film Academy for acting? They have a degree program for film acting I am thinking about too, in LA.

Wenda Zonnefeld

Hey Mathew, I watched your reel VERY NICE! Great work! :)

Matthew Skala

Wenda - I watched your video in turn, the 48hr film fest short, Nice work, thats really cool they did an animation for the project. I hadn't seen that before. I shot a couple 48hr film project films years ago. Brandi - I worked with some students from NYFA last year, not from the acting school though :(. I shot a thesis film for a Masters Student there and it got accepted into the Cannes Film Festival! Pretty Cool. My experience was good but I have heard from others that NYFA is the place for students who couldn't get into UCLA, USC, or AFI, and they had the attitude that it was a school for rejects or a community school version of Film School. But if their films are getting into Cannes, it can't be all bad. I know a DP who teaches there, he likes it and he is no dummy.

Brandi Alyssa Young

Thanks, Matthew! I watched your reel too, it is very nice, I so wish you were still here! Well, Thank you for letting me know what the locals think of NYFA, that is helpful, I don't think true, but helpful none the less. I believe Jessie Eisenberg is a graduate and he been nominated, so again, like you said, it can't be all that bad! lol AFI? Atlantic or Conservatory? I just found the Conservatory and I am checking into that one right now. Thanks. I do not want to go to UCLA. Too big for me, plus I'd have to do all those gen ed requirements, which I cannot stand! Plus, it still seems more theatre based, which I do not want either. So, thanks for the heads up, on AFI. :-)

Brandi Alyssa Young

AFI is strictly film then? I can't find anything for me. :( Poo! oh well!

Matthew Skala

yes, I don't know if they have an acting program. That might sound dumb but I just don't know. There are plenty of good Acting schools out here, I don't know what they are though, I have always been on the production side of things. Sorry I can't be of more help. Actually, now that I think of it, maybe you can get in touch with Burgess Jenkins (http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0420792/), I have worked with him, he is an actor in NC after having pounded the pavement in LA for a while. He runs an actors workshop in Winston-Salem, NC (http://www.carolinaactorsgroup.com/). You can try calling and maybe you'll have an opportunity to pick his brain.

Brandi Alyssa Young

That's an excellent idea, I know Burgess, well we've met, but I don't think he remembers. lol I will ask him. Thanks for that. I have been doing more research thanks to you and I found you are indeed right about NYFA! Even on the acting side! The BBB also gave them a F! So, I don't think I would be going there! lol So, thanks for cutting one off my list! Makes it easier for me.

Matthew Skala

Good to know, nice research and glad I can help. Let me know how it goes with Burgess.

Brandi Alyssa Young

Thanks, I will!
