On Writing : Influences: Anyone Other Novelists More Inspired By Movies Than Other Books? by Michael Cantrell

Influences: Anyone Other Novelists More Inspired By Movies Than Other Books?

So, I'm kind of a strange bird. I love novels. A lot. But I think I actually love movies a little bit more. I'm a pretty visual person. In fact, I see the stories I write as movies in my head. Camera angles, the whole works. Trying to translate that into novel format has been challenging to say the least.

What I've come to realize is that I have to take that image and find a way to get rid of the camera stuff and get to the meat of the scene from not only a visual sense, but also go deep into what the character is experiencing so the reader doesn't just see, but feel, what's happening.

I struggle with this though. I'd love to write comic books, but I can't afford an artist to do all of the artwork. It's expensive. I've done some screenplays, but to be honest, there's almost zero chance of the scripts getting made into a movie and I want to share my stories with the world. So novels are a medium that seems to work around all of those issues. Plus, like I said, I love novels. I've read 47 this year.

Anyway, does anyone else have this problem? Or advice in helping me overcome my visually minded hurdles?

Interesting that you mention that bit about giving myself creative freedom to write my stories the way I want. I’ve not done that, though I’ve wanted to. Maybe you’re right. I should probably stop trying to put limitations on myself and my creativity and just see what happens. So many books and videos tell you that your book has to be a certain way or in a specific format that it can feel constraining. Letting go of all that and just going for it would be so liberating.

Go ahead and novelize them....what do you have to loose (except time)? You have the scripts already, some interested party likes your novel and approaches to you with idea for a film, you're covered :)

That totally makes sense to me, Michael Cantrell. I find that music inspires me to write in a way that doesn't necessarily spoon-feed me the way other films do, so I can see how a different medium would similarly influence novelists.

Write, write, write. We all have movies going on in our heads as we write books, screenplays, tv scripts. The biggest way to learn is to do. Just write.
