Listen Up, Stage 32: Writers Need Pitch Sessions Too

Ok, if that doesn't get me banned, let's have some convo on this...

It's like this, see: Screenwriters get all the pitches they can swing a bat at. Soooo, how about us book writers? It seems a wee daft to hack together a script just so we can slap down the plastic to pitch a novel/narrative for adaptation.

How about rounding up some prods, screenwriters, agents, managers, and other wildlife looking for literary works to adapt for screen?

William Schumpert

It would be the same as a standard pitch. Present it as if it were a made for screen.

Jenean McBrearty

What a wonderful idea! Both my pitches were novels already published, and I thought the same thing. You know what else would be great? If folks like you (and me?) had a forum on which to discuss script issues. Like book "workshops" only we would include films already made. I just binge-watched an Italian limited series (seriously miscast, but the story was interesting until the end which was "and they lived happily ever after", they including a high-placed Nazi lawyer who deserts the army.) Anyway, we can swap pitches, too. Interested?

Sam Sokolow

This is a terrific idea! Thanks, Morgan.

Morgan Aitken

Whew (wipes brow in a state of greatest relief). Thanks Sam Sokolow ! I'm so glad you like it, and I assume, with you behind it, it's something Stage 32 will pursue?

Maurice Vaughan

I like your idea, Morgan Aitken. Right now, Stage 32 has an Adaptation Review & 60 Minute Call with an Executive (www.stage32.com/scriptservices/coverage/buy?id=66).

Maurice Vaughan

"You know what else would be great? If folks like you (and me?) had a forum on which to discuss script issues. Like book "workshops" only we would include films already made." That sounds like a fun idea, Jenean McBrearty. You (and anyone) can do that in the Anything Goes Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/anything_goes).

Morgan Aitken

Maurice Vaughan , excellent plug for the Adaptation Review & 60 Minute Call with an Executive - only thing is, you forgot the price. THREE-HUNDRED BUCKS ... which sounds like a lot more than $35. Not to mention, the adaptation review is only a few pages of synopsis or description.

I wonder what it would cost to get an exec to read one's ENTIRE literary work? Hmmmmm, a new, prestige motor? College entrance for their mediocre slacker kids? A seat in congress, or house of lords? BAFTA (or whatever the Yankee equivalent is) membership? A private island in Bahamas? A lunch date with the snivelling prince Harry and his (I'm a Celebrity, Get me outta here) wife? A steak breakfast, manly workout and grizzly bear riding adventure with Vladimir Putler? A small country (I hear, parts of Ukraine are being given away like party favours)?

Morgan Aitken

Jenean McBrearty , your idea is a good one. But please do not think for one second, the Anything Goes Lounge is anything but a dumping ground (blethering place) for posts, we esteemed Stage 32 Moderators and staff find, ... eh hem, uncomfortable, inconvenient, or can't quite outright delete due to fallout (umbrage and indignation). Think, 'under the rug.' Or out in the hall.

I would suggest the Writers' Room (paid subscription $40/month) here on stage 32, (and aye, it's my job to plug it, just like it's Maurice Vaughan 's job to plug other services, like that aforementioned $300 chit-chat with an exec), but really... in all honesty, it's the one place on stage 32 you'll find intelligent discourse. I guess it's true what they say, 'membership has its privileges.'

Maurice Vaughan

I agree with the Writers' Room suggestion, Morgan Aitken, but I don't see the Anything Goes Lounge as a dumping ground/under the rug/out in the hall type of thing. It's a place to discuss film, TV, and non-industry things. I've seen some great and useful discussions in that Lounge.

Morgan Aitken

Maybe you're right Maurice Vaughan about the Anything Goes Lounge. Technically there's so much info coming down the social media stand-pipe, it really comes down to what one makes of it... or gets placed on their screen by the algorithms. As for Anything Goes purgatory, I'm simply speaking from experience: calling it, as I see it.

Shellie Schmals

Hi Morgan Aitken - great suggestion!! There is definitely a need to help author's connect too! Glad Sam Sokolow was here to see it! :)

D.E. White

Brilliant suggestion Morgan Aitken and yes, so many adaptations going on, it would be an excellent addition to Stage 32. And yes, price point is an issue, but with the correct one, it be great to get that kind of feedback.

Morgan Aitken

Precisely, @D.E. White : price point. Screenwriters can try their pitches in front of an exec for $35 but the only option for writers with a literary work they'd like to see about adapting for film/TV, is the $300, hour-long conversation with a professional.

Personally, I'd love to have my 5 minutes in front of a pro (primed for adaptation pitches of literary works) for 35 bucks. I just don't need an entire hour to practise my sales spiel.

D.E. White

Same!
