Post-Production : 5.1 surround sound by Frank Van Der Meijden

5.1 surround sound

In the studio I did a check for the 5.1 surround sound for my short film Room Available. I wasn’t able to check this while editing. How do you deal with this normally? #movie #sound

Hi Frank Van Der Meijden - I unfortunately don't know the answer to this, but commenting in hopes someone in my network will see this and can respond?

Brad Carpenter

Frank, All my TV shows master in 5.1, and nowadays 7.1 as well. That mastering happens on the mix stage where they pan everything over to the appropriate speakers. Does that answer your question? If not, please tell me more, and I'll try to help.

Thanx, Amanda Toney

Hi Brad Carpenter thank you for your answer. I wasn't able to master anything at 5.1 at my place or my editor's because we didn't have the hardware (I think a lot of independent filmmakers are facing these circumstances). So I had to take it to the studio of my music producer where we did the check. I think there is no easier way, because you háve to set up the appropriate speakers.

Brad Carpenter

Yes, agreed. No way to pan everything correctly without the speakers to pan to. I'm assuming you were working in ProTools for sound?
