AMA: Help Me Help You - Post-Production

Hey, Stage32 Post People!

Richard "RB" Botto got a FANTASTIC question about what we can do to help other aspects of filmmaking other than writing (and by virtue of that, producing). So, let's start a little virtual Town Hall Q&A:

- What do you need help with? What is your immediate goal? What are your long-term goals?

- What have you experienced in the past that has worked? What pitfalls would you like to avoid?

- What suggestions do you have that would allow us to come together and help each other?

Respond below and then share this discussion with three members you'd like to weigh in and participate!

I have a few ideas - READ MINE AND SHARE YOUR OWN BELOW!

So, for example, what if we hosted a kind of "Check It Before You Wreck It" Day where people could submit a 5-minute clip of something they are working on and get feedback from the community?

Travis James Ivey

I like that. I am new to post production sound. Is it necessary that the mix be done by someone that is certified? Anyone have connections? We are extremely low on cash at the moment.

Hey, Travis James Ivey! I've actually invited Stage32-ers to post videos for feedback in the Your Stage Lounge, and on Fridays I'll stop by and give feedback for #FilmmakerFriday - if you have something, post it! https://www.stage32.com/lounge/promotion

All I ask is you scroll through and give feedback on three other videos as well. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing your post!

Thanks Karen. I am still trying to figure stage 32 layout. I just saw your post today.

I am on my first feature film as a producer, director on limited funds just like everyone else. My project is “Nice & Naughty, A Christmas Story” and I am about to finish foley and ADR is complete. I did it myself. Where can I find an affordable mixer to check my work and finish the film and do they have to be certified? I will find something to post in the on stage Lounge, but I am not exactly technical savvy. Slow learner here. However, I would be happy to answer any questions for people on how I got started if it would be helpful for them. Thank you.

Hi Karen "Kay" Ross ! One thing that I've been doing regarding my short film project (that's been in development and early stages of pre-production) during this quarantine is working on visual effects, motion graphics for titles and sound design elements for post-production so that once I am at that stage, I have my workflow figured out and know that I can accomplish post. I've created an animatic (in FrameForge) of the whole film which I can use to also work out production challenges before I even crew up. My old day job was doing payroll accounting for the American production company on Game of Thrones for 10 years, so I paid and interacted with many of the VFX team. They were fully involved throughout the whole production cycle and it opened my eyes to the advantages of pre-viz and building assets in advance.

Hey, Travis James Ivey! No worries - if you need more help navigating the lounges, I wrote a blog that can help:

For finding a mixer, you can post a job listing, even if the position is no-pay or low-pay: https://www.stage32.com/find-jobs/add

To expand that into "what can the community do for you", perhaps you could submit a clip from what you're mixing and get feedback before you finish? If that sounds useful to you, we've started giving feedback in the Your Stage Lounge: https://www.stage32.com/find-jobs/add

Thank you Karen E. Ross.

I turned my testimony with the music video on my project page into a booklet to help future music video producers.
