Looking to edit 70TB of footage into a 5 minute sizzler and one episode. How much do you as an Editor charge for this? I provide all music and everything else.

Matthew Muchka

70TB of footage, In what format? Is it 6k, 4k, 1080? I ask because that's not really much of a duration count, but a ton of material. If you need to comb through 300 hours of footage that's quite a bit different than 20 hrs. Will you be given any type of guide or outline for the project or are you starting from scratch?

Nina Adams

The production was shot for 8 days, total footage runtime is no accurate count yet. Number of cameras was 3 Main cameras bmpcc 6K, 1 Sony A7Riii, 1 Sony A7iii, and 6 Gopro 9-8-7. The format it was shot in was Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K & 6K Pro in BLRaw 2K-6K. Yes we will have a logger to produce the outlines.

Generally, when hiring an editor there are two ways to approach charging - per hour or per project. It's possible you could negotiate a flat fee for the gig regardless of how long it takes to comb through the footage. The big thing you'll need to determine is your milestones or the stopping places where they will check in with their progress, and get paid. Milestones are typically broken up into three at a minimum: first at signing, second at a rough draft, and final payment at a revised draft. After that, just define what you want to have done at each milestone, both what you do together and what the editor submits in order to get paid. Finally, you should stipulate how many versions you want. Typically you provide clients with 3 versions to choose from during the rough cut stage so you have clearer feedback about how to approach the final. Also, with a 5 minute sizzle, you would be in a great position to put together a 30-90sec trailer as well. I hope that helps!
