Showreel Tips

Hello all, I'm sorry if this question has been asked a hundred times before. I'm in the process of making a showreel and was looking for some input as to what format it should take. I looked online and found the most common form is a montage style. The montage seems OK but it doesn't really tell you anything about the scenes or the way it was cut, I would be interested to hear what your thoughts are on showreel format? Thanks again.

Jeff Jennings

Did you ever come up with a solution Tony? It's the age old question.

Tony Fisher

Hello Jeff, Sadly no I havent been able to come to any real conclusion. In the long run i think it just comes down to personal choice depending on the type of footage your working with.

Hey Tony. I use scenes in mine, so Producers and Directors can see my style and choices. Stefan LaToure International Award Winning Editor

I agree with Stephan I think full scenes would give context and demonstrate the editing. Perhaps 2 or 3 scenes from different works totaling about 10 minuets.

Hi Mark, that's interesting. From the so called tutorials I have seen and as well as other sample reels the length shouldn't be longer then 1 minute to 1 and a half minutes. Although I do like the idea of a 10 minute reel as it would give you alot of space for creative editing.

Tony, What's happening in the scene isn't really important for an acting reel. It's more important that your performance is showcased, which is usually best when there are few or no cuts. If a scene is cut in a way that interferes with showcasing your performance, it might be better to use a different clip. A performance montage is a good way to go, with clips lasting 10-30 seconds each. I recommend keeping the total length of your reel close to the 3 minute mark. Limit any intro to 5 seconds, then begin with YOUR performance immediately. Make sure it's easy to identify you in the scene and put your very best clips at the beginning of your reel. I hope this helps.

Hi Jay, thanks. Yes that does help a great deal, I agree roughly 3 minutes seems about right to really give the full flavor of the scene.

Stefan LaToure

Exactly how Jay said Tony, under 3 minutes, 10-30 seconds each. Here's my old one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHcsAujcE1I I have 5 scenes, total 2:44.
