Behind the Scenes: Mental Health Initiative

I came across this initiative and thought it best to share it with the Producers among us since we are first and foremost concerned with safety. They have a TON of resources, but I was particularly keen on the "Mental Health First Aid Training". That's genius!

They also have "toolbox talks", "Stop Bullying, Harassment, and Intimidation", and "Entertainment Industry Therapist Finder", among many others.

What are your big takeaways? What are you likely to employ from this site?

Thank you. I just downloaded the bullying one-sheets. I am creating work/production environments that center neurodivergent people. Too often neurotypical norms automatically exclude us. For example, common grip language or bro centric behavioral norms. I had a guy physically cover my mouth at a networking event a couple years ago bc he didn't want me to continue speaking. That was 2018! Thx again.

Cherelynn Baker

Yes! This is so important as there are more stresses to everyday life and having more to "worry" about at work, and what "working" entails now is important. Mental health needs priority for all! Thanks for sharing!

So glad you found value in the resource, Jenna Patrice! And may I just say - wow. I can't even compute someone covering my mouth at a networking event. Admittedly, I have a few pre-programmed responses to new people reaching into my space without provocation due to my two blackbelts. Perhaps we really should be teaching all of this under the topic of "safety", then! LOL

You are most welcome, Cherelynn Baker!

Thanks for sharing, Karen "Kay" Ross. That's an impressive collection of resources. "Stop Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation" stood out because I write about bullying a lot in scripts.

Sadly, this resource is needed more than ever. Particularly, the guide to help find therapists in the Entertainment Industry. I’ve been devastated by the suicides of several of my favorite actors and want to do everything I can to stop the world from losing any more bright lights. Thanks, Karen "Kay" Ross !

Karen "Kay" Ross it's great that you are getting the word out about mental health. It is certainly a topic that means so much to me. I decided to use my experiences to create scripts centred around anxiety, stress, and mental health. I believe it is not talked about enough. And it goes beyond just the entertainment industry, It affects everyone. We need more things like this to help people. it's my mission if you will to bring these issues to light. Thanks for sharing.

This makes my heart so happy, y'all! And please do share with anyone you feel may benefit from these resources!

I'm not a producer, but I am aware of mental health issues which can negatively impact your work, like and even cause physical problems. Producers who want their teams and talent to feel at ease is a great thing! Everyone knows that we all work best when we're not in pain, mental, emotional or otherwise. Seems like a great investment!!

An editor acquaintance of mine was fired earlier this year from his job editing a major British comedy for asking for a mental health day. The lack of compassion is scary, and it adds to the stigma around talking about these subjects, because if we do? We might get let go. Would really love to see producers and directors implementing lots of the tools you've shared in the future, it'll make a safer work environment for all of us.

Thanks for sharing this important mental health issue, Karen. I want to add these two suggestions also , which you can do easily. That´s is meditating on Dolphins, which I practise daily about 20 minutes by making use of visualization. It increases your energy, is a source of inspiration, lowers your blood pressure and stops stress. Then I make use of EFT which means Emotional Freedom Therapy which is a tapping therapy to rewire your brain,. You can find all the info on the tapping solution.com It helps with your mental and physical issues.

So glad to read all these comments and to hear the importance everyone in these comments are putting on mental health. I am a director and Creative Development Facilitator and have been training as a psychotherapist for the past 5 years so that I can deepen my work with actors. I have developed an approach to ground actors to themselves as they venture off and explore their characters emotional life. It's not therapy but it is therapeutic with strong element of self-reflection. https://www.stage32.com/lounge/introduce_yourself/Actors-and-producers-are-you-currently-involved-in-telling-a-traumatic-story
