Social TV and Transmedia.. is anyone paying attention?

Here are 2 huge areas where audiences are beyond the reach of conventional media producers: A) Transmedia – interactive stories told over multiple platforms in a way that is expansive rather than repetitive. B) Social TV – the place where Television and Social Media meet. Successful Social TV activity produces a massive amount of social interactions, which result in increased viewing figures. If anyone here is paying attention to the rapid decline in ticket sales, the move of cable and major networks to digital platforms and how major brands embrace transmedia and Social TV as a means to expand their market, it's important for us to produce more stories where the audience can shift from purely spectator to spectator/participant. Imagine having a great script with remarkable characters where the audience can interact with them and immerse in the story world allowing them to guide the producer to new directions. The viral expansion of this type of storytelling can be astronomical when done creatively. Just look at the "Why So Serious" campaign done by 42 Entertainment if you need an example and there are tons of others.. I'm seeking visionary innovators like myself that seek to be AHEAD of the curve. A wave takes time to hit the shore and you don't want to be sitting there on the sidelines.

And for any of you that don't see the importance, check out the Social Film project that Dell and Intel have sponsored and directed by Robert Stromberg (Maleficent) along with Tom Hanks and J.K. Simmons streaming exclusively on Hulu beginning March 25th: http://insidefilms.com/ This approach engages audience by requesting them to help design characters and more.. The more engaged, the faster the viral element of a story..

Charlie.. as you can tell from the press release, major brands and studios like Sony see the potential to engage an audience at a deep level through moving in the Social Film direction. Similar to what happened with music, Netflix began the movement with the streaming business in conjunction to disks, a sign of what's to come. You might also take a look at what 42 Entertainment did with the Dark Knight franchise with the creation of the "Why So Serious" campaign that garnered millions of views and participants prior to the general release of the film. Since you're in the UK where Transmedia is FAR more popular you might explore what Bellyfeel is doing and others. The fact remains that viewers are using their mobile devices while and/or in conjunction with larger screens. Developing apps/games tied to a story 'jig saw puzzle' then becomes seamless. Add social media and the ability to comment on blogs, discussions and send personal messages on Twitter TO A CHARACTER, you have a multi-platform environment ideal for engaging and broadening an audience. Brands are investing heavily in use of transmedia for product launches and enhancing existing customer bases as well. Yet more opportunities for those of us that are dialed in on the most creative ways to deliver content. Make sense?
