Producing : What is independent filmmaking? by Carol Chang

What is independent filmmaking?

How would one go about being an independent filmmaker?

Ken Koh

In the simplest terms it means you get your own money and make your film outside the system. Which is what I now do and always recommend to new filmmakers. Unless you know someone, or your screenplay is so good, why would anyone give you money if you have no history, credits or done anything before? Though it's hard and takes a lot of work, It's actually more feasible to get your own money, make your own film, that makes money and prove yourself first, and then get a deal from a major studio or mini major studio. In fact, they'll seek you out after that. Nothing is more powerful in raising real money than ticket sales data in my experience.

D Marcus

Independent filmmaking is making a movie without any of the big studios. One goes about being an independent filmmaker by making movies. As a producer find a script you like, put together a budget, find a director, gather a crew and audition a cast and then make a movie. Sounds pretty easy, doesn't it?
