‘3 Body Problem’ Production Designer on Building Ancient Mongolia, a Medieval Cathedral and VR Headsets
I just finished watching episode 6 of this series. The previews made me curious enough to watch it, despite the negative reviews on IMDb (one from a guy who hadn’t even watched it, but had written a review of the reviews and then speculated about the series). The age of journalism is dead, or so it seems!
Here’s a Variety article looking at the work of Production Designer, Deborah Riley. It would appear that if I was more artistically gifted, this would have been my dream job. I love the collaborative process, she discusses. As a Director, it always appeals to me.
“Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show [Game of Thrones] was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.”
The series moves from the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960s to a present day London and on to the gaming world. (With more time jumps and locations along the way). I’m loving the vast scope of the story and the characters are magnificently drawn and the actors do a great job. I particularly love Liam Cunningham (Thomas Wade), Eiza Gonzalez (Auggie Salazar), Alex Sharp (Will Downing), John Bradley (Jack Rooney), but all the cast really catch the eye and are characters of substance.
But the real eye-catcher is the production design. Well done, Deborah Riley and your team of collaborators.
Tonight I’ll be watching episode 7, if there are not too many viewers on our Netflix family package! Yes I know, a first world problem. But please delve into this series and keep us posted on your thoughts. And please, no spoilers - don’t ruin the ride for other viewers.
