Bass Reeves: The First African American US Deputy Marshall

In my efforts as a screenwriter to bring back the people erased/marginalized from history, meet Bass Reeves. He was born into slavery and was a fugitive slave until 1865. Learn more about Bass and his legacy in the video. With the turmoil in the US among a pandemic, Reeve's legacy is crucial for us to understand.

While a fugitive slave, he spent time with the Cherokee and other nations and learned their languages, customs and their landscapes. Because of his knowledge, he was the perfect candidate for a US Deputy Marshall.

The Lone Ranger is said to emulate Bass but the character was always a white man. #hbo #Watchmen had Reeves as part of the #storyline as the show #educated us about #slavery and the continued treatment of #AfricanAmericans in the #US .

Thank you so very much for watching & your time!

Thank you for paying homage to this groundbreaking and timeless life of Bass Reeves.

Some interesting scenes could be awakened due to this life, if not already portrayed in previous films:

"Once, he had to arrest his own son for murder.[5] One of his sons, Bennie Reeves, was charged with the murder of his wife. Deputy Marshal Reeves was disturbed and shaken by the incident, but allegedly demanded the responsibility of bringing Bennie to justice.".

"Reeves brought in some of the most dangerous criminals of the time, but was never wounded, despite having his hat and belt shot off on separate occasions.".

I thank you for all you do.

God Bless,

John German

Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised Reeve's Wiki site had the information you mentioned when I visited it a couple of weeks ago. I hope people learn more about him; he is amazing!

HI Ashwini, Thanks for sharing this. I have completed a screenplay about a true story about a slave who helped people to freedom and am working on another one along those lines. Sounds like we share a similar vision in bringing to life little known stories about people who were heroes but didn't make it into history books because they were African American, people of color, or anyone whose ancestry is from Asia or Latin America, etc. ! Would love to learn more and find a place for him in one of my screenplays and see what your other works focus on!
